Scientific Outreach & Education
Teaching Experience

During my two years as a masters student at Adelphi, I worked as a teaching assistant in Vertebrate Zoology Lab, Principles of Regulatory Physiology Lab, Comparative Anatomy
Lab, Cell Biology Lab, and multiple sections of both Biological Concepts & Methods I and II Labs. I also had the opportunity to give two guest lectures in Vertebrate Zoology (Turtle Diversity & Evolution; Mesozoic Diapsids) and one guest lecture in Comparative Anatomy (The Respiratory System). Since starting at McGill in 2013, I have worked as a teaching assistant in six sections of Principles: Organismal Biology Lab (BIOL111).
As a Special Assistant Professor at Hofstra University from 2017-2018, I carried a full-time teaching load. For the Fall 2017 semester, I was the course coordinator and only lecturer/lab instructor for Biology in Society, which is a non-majors Introductory Biology lecture and laboratory class. I also taught Scientific Process Skills, which is a major's course focusing on the scientific method, experimental design, and scientific writing. I continued both of these courses in the Spring 2018 semester. In the Spring 2018 semester, I developed and taught a graduate course on the Biology of Fishes. I also developed and taught a graduate course on
Scientific Communication at Adelphi University in the Spring 2018 semester.
During my time as a Postdoctoral Fellow at UT MSI, I was the Instructor of Record for an undergraduate course, The Biology of Sharks, Skates, and Rays, during the 2021 May-mester. I also gave two guest lectures in a Marine Environmental Policy course during the Spring 2022 semester: Toxicants and Climate Change in Marine Systems & Scientific Communication: Communicating with Politicians.

Mentoring Experience

I have had the opportunity to work with over a dozen undergraduate students at Adelphi University, McGill University, Hofstra University, and UT MSI during my time as a graduate student and postdoctoral fellow. I have aided these students in the development of project ideas, establishment of protocols, proposal writing, data collection, analyses, and presentations. I have also trained students in techniques including electromyography (EMG), conducting Ucrit and fast-start swimming trials, and kinematic analysis of swimming. I also volunteered as a mentor to two high school students in the Gifted and Talented Education (GATE) Program at Sacred Heart High School in Montreal, QC.
Conference Presentations & Invited Seminars

I have been fortunate enough to present my work at numerous conferences across the United States, Canada, and Europe including the the International Congress on the Biolgy of Fishes (ICBF), Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry (SETAC),Society of Experimental Biology (SEB), Texas Bays and Estuaries (TBEM), Society of Integrative and Comparative Biology (SICB), the Adelphi University Research Conference (AURC), the Northeast Area Vertebrate Morphology & Evolution Conference, the Metropolitan Association of College and University Biologists (MACUB) Annual Conference, the Genomes to Biomes (G2B) Meeting, the Annual Electric Fish Conference, and the Northeast Regional Vertebrate and Evolution Symposium (NERVES). I have also given seminars at Adelphi University, Hofstra University, UT, UT MSI, the University of Alberta, SUNY New Paltz, and Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School (in Copiague, New York).
I also co-lead a symposium with Lela Schlenker on the interaction between toxicants and climate change at the 2022 American Physiological Conference in San Diego, CA.

The WaterFront Center (WFC)
I spent 2012 working as a Naturalist and Marine Science Educator for The WaterFront Center, a great not-for-profit community center located in Oyster Bay, New York. During my time at the WFC, I assisted in curriculum development for students of all ages and backgrounds. I worked as an educator for programs for all ages, including pre-school children and senior citizens. I also had the opportunity to work as part of the Junior Summer Program team, developing the curriculum and teaching marine science to children between the ages of seven and nine every day during the summer.
